1.14. Still Alive by Kirroc 1.14. Still Alive by Kirroc
It took several drowsy awakenings for the sensation to truly sink into Daemane’s head and jerk her fully into consciousness: where there should have been three warm bodies beside her, there was only one. A quick look confirmed that of her three cubs, Nuru was the only one slumbering where she was supposed to be. Panic lit up in Daemane’s heart and she sprang to her paws, a cry springing from her lips and her paws thumping into Agano’s side.

The King snapped at her, but only once – because her frantic eyes and gestures supplied the reason her voice seemed too weak to do, and he saw that his son was missing. Like his mate, he was quickly upright and roaring to wake the den. The pride lifted sleepy heads in confusion at being woken so early, but that passed for them as speedily as it had for Agano.

As the lionesses streaked from the cave in search of trails and clues, Agano paused to round on his Queen, eyes narrowed in rage and fangs bared. “If I find out that your whelp is behind this, Daemane…” He let the threat trail off, then spun around and was out the doorway in a flash.

The gold lioness watched him go, heart heavy, but she didn’t wait long. Her sons were out there somewhere, and she’d be damned if she’d sit here on her tail and wait for news of their fate. Especially with what Agano had just said. She was going out there, too, and she would protect her young from any threat, even from dangers within the pride. So even if she hated to hear Nuru cry out to her in fear and worry and confusion, Daemane fled after the rest of the pride, trusting in the two females left behind for the purpose to watch over her daughter and the other pride cubs.

Banagi and Baasho watched as their own cubs sniffed and poked at the huddled leonine ones, and talked in low voices about what to do now.

“We can’t just leave them, but we don’t even know where they need to go. What if they’ve been abandoned? What if no one is even missing them?”

Baasho twitched his tail, uncomfortable with the whole ordeal. “I doubt that. They look healthy and well cared for, and if you care to recall, love, the Prince they presented some time back was a big gold coloured boy. Fits that one over there to a tee.”

They both turned their heads to look at the lions in question. Silence for a beat, then:

“True. He could be the Prince.” The admission was slow and hesitant, for Banagi hated that he’d forgotten all about the presentation (what hyena cares much about lion politics and posturing, really?), but he also knew that Baasho was better at such things and would have more of a clue about it all. “But if he is, we still have a problem. If we leave them here, something else may find them, and then we’ll get blamed for not protecting the heir to the kingdom.”

“And if we stay with them, we get blamed for trying to hurt them, just because we are hyena and they lions.”

Banagi pasted his ears back to his skull, temper flaring. “So we just leave ‘em? That what you’re saying? Just leave ‘em here, next to a giant lion corpse and hope they get found?”

“I didn’t say that, Banagi, I didn’t.”

“Then what?”

Baasho knew when his mate started to get belligerent it was time to abase himself to the other. “I only wish to give you all the facts to aid your decision. I want you to be as you always are: perfection and my ideal. Please, take what I say and show me the right way to go!”

Mollified, Banagi sniffed and turned to look once more at the cubs. The little lions were starting to come out of the shellshock and were even taking half-hearted swipes at the little hyenas, who thought this a great game and nipped back at them. Knowing their fierce jaws might do unintentional damage to the lion cubs, the big male barked out, “Edume! Banzai! No biting!”

The hyena cubs immediately subsided, tucking tails under bellies and whining, each making mournful little yips at being scolded and talking over one another to explain how they hadn’t been biting at all, really. Banagi ignored them and instead spoke to his mate as if the conversation hadn’t even been interrupted at all. “I say we take them most of the way home to Pride Rock, and then watch them get home under their own power. No one ever need know we were involved at all, and we’re all satisfied. The cubs are safe, we are safe, and no harm done.”

“A wise and worthy decision, darling.” Baasho nuzzled at Banagi, taking care to keep his head down, showing proper obedience to his more dominant partner. “As ever. Let us do this and then go home. It will be light soon, and the day is no longer ours.”

With that, the two adults clucked for their cubs to follow them, then nudged the lions into motion. “Time to go back where you belong, little ones.”

At first hesitant and shaky, the lion cubs began to walk with more surety as the minutes passed, bolstered by the patience and gentleness from the hyenas. They even began to perk up enough to start thinking about the new day coming their way. They had gotten to see Scar, had been able to witness a duel to the death between lion and hyena, and now were travelling with hyena! Who knew so much adventure could have been had all in one night? And as the shock and trauma fell away, as it often does for the young faster than for the old, they couldn’t help jostling their compatriots or darting in and out of the elder’s feet, trying out laughter again.

Oh, what a great day to be still alive!

Something just occurred to me, what would Agano do if Mufasa was killed?
He can't reveal Tumai as his cub...

I meant when her brothers went off, it sounds like they don't really include her in their games...

Boys usually don't. It seems to be a kid thing that boys want to play with boys, not their sisters. You know?
